A Call For Submissions

This Community: Voices of Our Youth

A Writing Project For Students in Taney, Stone, Christian, and Douglas Counties

This Community: Voices of Our Youth is a multi-school writing event sponsored by Project TANEY, Inc. The purpose is to provide a forum within which student writers might share their perspectives of the people, places, and events (past or present) of their communities.

Student writers in grades 6 - 12 currently enrolled in any public, private, or home-schooled environment in Taney, Stone, Christian, and Douglas counties are eligible to submit original compositions.

Prose, poetry, or script forms are accepted. Basically, the only real restriction is that the writer's community must be evident in the piece. Essays and personality profiles should range from 500 to 1500 words. Settings of short stories should focus on our local Ozarks region. Naturally, teachers will want to encourage appropriate usage and mechanics for a general audience, and the standards for any given form should be followed, since all submissions fitting the guidelines will be published as part of a multi-school, collaborative CD presentation about our area.

All writings, along with a completed submission form for each participant, are to be in the possession of Project TANEY, Inc. directors no later than April 25. We ask, however, that sponsoring teachers earmark any writings that they consider high quality pieces. The writers of these selected pieces will be invited to a special writers' reception at Hollister High School on Saturday, May 1, where the students will be asked to read their work. Students who submit songs or scripts that are selected for presentation should plan to perform their work as intended. We encourage student presenters to include any appropriate and creative use of visual or auditory effects as part of their presentation (photos, illustrations, music, etc.). In addition to being invited to this special event, the work of these selected writers will be published in an upcoming issue of The Ozarks Mountaineer.

Cash awards to individual students will not be given, however each participating school district will receive library resources from The Ozarks Mountaineer Bookstore and Project TANEY , Inc.

*Seeing the Missouri Ozarks Through the Writings of Students in Stone, Taney, Christian, and Douglas Counties*

Dear Students:
This is an invitation to you and your teachers to take part in a student writers' project designed with you in mind. This Community: Voices of Our Youth is a gathering of student writers. It is a celebration of your community as seen through your eyes. It is a place to share your insights about the people, places, and events that make your community, your school, and your family all that it is.
Every community has wonderful stories to tell: stories about past events, stories about the people who have lived there, stories about the way people react to the natural surroundings of that community. Many of these stories have been passed down to you from the adults in your lives. Those are great stories, and once a story has been shared with you, it becomes a part of your story. Sometimes the stories generate within you. We want to hear those stories--your stories, and share them with others through your writings and the readings of your writings.
This Community: Voices of Our Youth provides the stage from which you can share your personal narrative, essay, personality profile, short story, poem, script, or song. Your teacher has more information about This Community: Voices of Our Youth, but more than anything, we hope you will accept our invitation to join student writers from throughout our Ozarks region for this exciting, memorable occasion.
