This area was overrun with outlaws and a vigilante group called the Baldknobbers did form to uphold the law. This groups' fall from justice is described in the book. The book also describes a great drought that occured in the Ozarks, which really happened when Wright was staying with the Ross family. The caves he describes, while liberties are taken, do exist. If you happen to be in the Branson area, do take time to visit The Shepherd of the Hills. It is an experience you will not want to miss.
